Discover PlanetObserver's New Viewer: Explore the World with Cutting-Edge Imagery

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our new and improved viewer on the PlanetObserver website! This exciting upgrade replaces the previous version, offering an enhanced and user-friendly experience to showcase our global satellite imagery.

Here’s a closer look at the features that make our new viewer a unique tool for anyone who wants to evaluate the quality of our imagery for a specific project or simply explore the beauty of our planet.

High-Quality World Imagery, Now Easier to Navigate

As always, the viewer displays PlanetSAT, our signature global 10-meter resolution imagery basemap. This stunning imagery mosaic provides a seamless image of the Earth with exceptional reality.

A small reminder – With 10-meter resolution imagery, you can see large human-made features, such as roads and stadiums, but you won’t be able to see your house or your neighbor’s swimming pool. Medium resolution is perfect for a global perspective down to city-level views. To ensure the best experience, we’ve blocked excessive zooming, preventing disappointment with image quality beyond the intended scale.

France imagery at 5-meter resolution is also included, allowing you to explore the country in greater details. This is a beta test of 5-meter super resolution processed with AI from PlanetSAT 10-meter imagery. Be kind, there’s still room for improvement as we refine this feature!

In addition to high-quality imagery, we’ve introduced more fluid navigation, ensuring a smooth and intuitive experience whether you’re zooming in on a specific location or flying over continents and regions.

Two Display Modes: Globe and Flat Earth

One of the great additions to the viewer is the ability to switch between two display modes:

1. Globe View – The viewer opens in a beautiful 3D globe view, delivering a lifelike representation of our planet.

2. Flat Earth View – For those who prefer a traditional flat map layout, you can easily switch modes by clicking the dedicated icon at the top right.

The world looks breathtaking in both modes, but we’re confident you’ll agree that our globe view surpasses even Google Earth in showcasing the beauty of our planet!

Three Map Styles for Unique Perspectives

To tailor your experience further, the viewer offers three distinct map styles:

  1. Visitor Mode: An information-free view that lets you enjoy the imagery without distractions.
  2. Traveler Mode: Displays borders and names, this is the mode on which the viewer opens.
  3. Explorer Mode: Adds an extra layer of details, including roads, borders, and place names for a comprehensive view.

Switching between these modes is simple and intuitive, by clicking the dedicated icon, allowing you to explore your areas of interest and the world in the way that best suits your needs.

Map Styles

Another small reminder: while PlanetObserver specializes in providing high-quality satellite imagery, we do not create vector data such as roads, borders, and place names. This additional information is sourced from OpenStreetMap, and we thank their team greatly for offering such a valuable open-source dataset that enhances our viewer’s functionality.

A Robust New Search Functionality

Finding your favorite locations has never been easier! The new search mode is highly responsive and precise, enabling you to locate any place on the map in just seconds. It also provides GPS coordinates of the selected location.

Whether you’re evaluating the imagery quality of a specific site or simply traveling the world virtually, the search functionality makes it really easy.
